Title

[Platform_Window]Flash Player 10.3.183.5 Shared library/gotoAndPlay() or gotoAndStop() bug

Description

Problem Description: If a swf contains shared library assets and includes a preload movieclip at the start of the movie with an onClipEvent to handle the preloading, the swf will not load. Removing the shared library assets will fix the issue. Commenting out the code in the movielclips onClipEvent(enterFrame) handler will also fix the issue.

Steps to Reproduce: Include one or more movieclips in the library that are imported for runtime sharing. Add a movieclip to frame 1 with the following code:

onClipEvent(enterFrame) {
this.loaded = this._parent._framesloaded;
if (this.loaded > 0 && this.loaded == this._parent._totalframes) {
this._parent.gotoAndPlay("beginMovie");
} else {
var iLoaded = _parent.getBytesLoaded()/_parent.getBytesTotal();
this.loadingBar._width = iLoaded*100;
}
}

This example is a simple loading bar preloader.

Export the swf. Test the swf in a Browser and the movie will not load - there is a white screen and rightclicking shows the Movie not loaded... message in the context menu. I have tested in Firefox 3.6.18 and also in IE8.0.6001. Comment out the line: this._parent.gotoAndPlay("beginMovie"); export and retest in a browser and the movie loads. Uncomment the line this._parent.gotoAndPlay("beginMovie"); and instead change the linkage to all movieclips imported for runtime sharing (deselect the import for runtime sharing checkbox). Export and retest in a browser and the movie loads. This is an issue for the _root swf and any swfs loaded into the _root swf that also contain shared library assets and onClipEvent(enterFrame) preloaders that use gotoAndPlay() or gotoAndStop().

Actual Result: Swf does not load when running in a browser, both from a local drive and a webserver.

Expected Result: Not an issue in previous versions of the Flash player (at least back to version 7).

Any Workarounds: remove the linkage for any movieclips imported for runtime sharing OR remove the gotoAndPlay() or gotoAndStop for the preloader onClipEvent(enterFrame) handler.

    @Ping Huang - I saw it was marked as 'fixed' on this ticket but it does not mention which version of flash the fix has been applied to under 'Fixed In Build' so I assumed this had not actually been rolled out live yet.

    Probably worth updating 'fixed in build' to show that it's 10.3.183.7

    hi @moloko5, I noticed that you left a new vote info indicated you still encounter this issue. Did you try our latest 10.3.183.7 which includes the fix for this issue? (This is the reason that this bug get closed as fixed.) if not, pls help us to file a new bug with test media and source code. we are happy to follow up your issues there. Thank you.

    hi @samunplugged, do you refer to 2940647? Please kindly drop me an email at phuang@adobe.com if there has confusion for those bugs.

    We appreciate your product feedback.

    @Ping the comments you mention in '990 is not helping. This is not a user-error. This is an issue that your team should resolve immediately instead of passing the buck to Flash developers.

    Pratik, your attached file show same issue with https://bugbase.adobe.com/index.cfm?event=bug&id=2945990 which is caused due to swf integrity. You need to recompile your swf with correct swf version according to its AS version.

    If you still see a rendering issue with 10.3.183.7, it is not same issue with this bug. We have made security tightening in 10.3.183.5 release and swf version check became more strict than before. Please make sure your swf is properly published for AS level and version numbers. Especially for AS3 code that require swf version 9 or later. Please feel free to open a new bug if you need further investigation. Thank you for your feedback.

    I am still experiencing this issue, even after installing the latest .7 release. Note that I wasn't actually using a symbol that was explicitly imported for runtime sharing. However, I narrow it down to a component (.mxp) that had been imported into each fla where the issue occurred. This may be using the same mechanisms as "import for runtime sharing" behind the scenes, but as I mentioned I'm still seeing the exact same issue.
    Should I open a new bug?

    It's been 10 days since it was launched version 10.3.183.5, 8 days since the bug was reported. For now, Adobe has not done anything, not even stopped the distribution of the version with the bug. Millions of users are being seriously affected by the world and Adobe have not done anything and has not said what their plans are.

    Many who choose Adobe products as the foundation of our business we are beginning to wonder if we were wrong.

    What we do?, Do you expect Adobe released a patch does not know when?, Do you expect Adobe launched Flash 11 does not know when?, We start to modify hundreds of files with great economic cost that this entails? , we start to migrate to HTML 5?.

    As others have said, the fact that this bug is partially fixed in a beta release does not help us. We have hundreds of corporate clients, very large businesses, that each have tens to hundreds of thousands of users each. We cannot expect our large corporate clients to permit installation of a BETA version of the Flash plugin.

    I wholeheartedly agree with RB_Douglas that this bug should be considered a SHOW STOPPER. Our products/software use Flash extensively, and this bug renders our products unusable, and as has also been said, is costing us revenue and reputation as every minute ticks by.

    I have been a Flash evangelist of sorts in our company, promoting the continued use of it in our products/software. This issue along with the appearance of a weak response from Adobe is truly hurting my position in the debate between Flash and HTML 5 for us moving forward.

    I cannot begin to describe the degree of work that will be required to work around this issue. We CANNOT wait for an official release of your beta.

    "This bug was partly fixed in Flash Player 11 beta 2. And our engineers are working on the fix for it. Thanks! "

    I'm confused by this statement.

    1. Are you an Adobe employee?
    2. When you say the engineers are working on a fix do you mean they are working on a fix for 11 beta 2 or for 10.3.183.5?

    Can you provide any insight on the progress? Any estimates will help us in dealing with the constant stream of support tickets our company has to deal with as a result of your lack of QA.

    This incident really makes an HTML5 solution seem like a more attractive route to take for future versions of our software.

    It's been six days and our company has to rely on ourselves to create the workarounds on this issue. 400+ files have to be modified, tested, and deployed on numerous locations; requiring us to pull resources from various projects. Very disappointed with the introduction and handling of this issue. Our software generates much more traffic on the weekends. It is Thursday night in many parts of the world already, when will the fix be ready?

  • RB_Douglas

    1:40:06 AM GMT+00:00 Aug 18, 2011

    We strongly believe that the priority level of this bug should be changed to 5 as this is a 'show stopping' problem that should warrant release of an emergency update to the player. At the very least, 10.3.183.5 should be withdrawn to prevent any collective further exposure. We have 40,000+ users who could potentially be affected, and it is making us seriously question whether we can continue using a Flash platform in the future.

    Please Adobe, can you provide a little feedback as to when we will see this fix deployed.

    Do we have to wait for Flash Player 11 to be released (Sometime before the end of 2011 according to http://labs.adobe.com/technologies/flashplatformruntimes/flashplayer11/?tabID=details#tabTop ) or will we see this fixed sooner in a 10.3 release?

  • Yang Liu

    2:40:49 AM GMT+00:00 Aug 17, 2011

    I found if gotoAndPlay() to a frame that is after the frame that uses the shared library asset, the swf will fail to load. For example, if frame 5 and later frames uses the shared library asset, gotoAndPlay to frame 4 and before will work correctly, but gotoAndPlay to frame 5 and later will cause the swf fail to load.

    We have been able to replicate this bug by doing the following:

    Place an "imported for runtime sharing" movieclip on stage that spans 2 frames.

    Add a gotoAndPlay(1) action to frame 2.

    Publish and test in browser.

    This results in a blank screen

    This leads me to believe it is not a preload bug but something to do with what gets called upon changing frame.

    We have tested this on Windows XP, 32-bit, IE7 and Chrome. All fail.

    Additional info, the player behaviour is the same (crash) with these combinations of flash player-web browser-operating system:
    - Windows7-64bit-IE9.0.8112.16421-Flash10.3.183.5_Activex
    - Windows7-64bit-Firefox5.0.1-Flash10.3.183.5_Other
    - WindowsXP-32bit-IE8-Flash10.3.183.5_Activex
    - WindowsXP-32bit-Firefox5.0.1-Flash10.3.183.5_Other
    - Osx10.6-Chrome13.0.782.107-Flash10.3.183.5

    The problem doesn't show up either with older versions of the player (for example OSx10.7-Chrome13.0.782.107-Flash10.3.181.36 ) or with the 11Beta (for example Windows7-64bit-Firefox5.0.1-Flash11.0.1.98_Other)

    We have been unable to remote debug the crash of the player since the remote debugger won't load an swf that uses shared libraries (CS5) and I'm not sure it would be useful to be able to do it

    Hi, I have added a test project that reproduces the issue, in order for the player to crash (and report movie not loaded ) the gotoAndPlay (or gotoAndStop) must be to a frame placed earlier in the timeline, if the frame is positioned later in the timeline the call completes and the player works as expected

    This absolutely has to be fixed. We have almost exactly the same setup as described here only instead of onClipEvent(enterFrame) we use the more up-to-date 'this.onEnterFrame' preloader code... so it's easy to see how our many hundreds of courses could also have been affected.
    Adobe, you really need to sort this out - these sorts of backwards compatibility issues seem to be on the increase! Given that flash is a technology always under fire you need to do your best to be whiter-than-white. Not making life a nightmare for your developers like this is pretty much step 1!

    I cannot believe the 10.3.183.5 is still being distributed knowing that this is so serious.

    Why wasn't a rollback issued as a .6 at the very least as soon as you knew this was so serious?

    This is a very LARGE nail in the coffin of Flash where developers like me who were on the fence regarding ditching and moving on to full time HTML5 development.

    We've had a problem with AS2 files using a Shared Object Library not working since this release. The only quick solution we could come up with was to flatten all SOL items, as we had paying customers calling up complaining they couldn't use the site. Oh, what great fun its been opening, fixing and republishing 50+ fla's. URGENT! bug needs to be fixed ASAP.

    My company uses Flash for handling conference registrations, and this issue has forced us to reengineer a lot of our code, wasting our time and our clients' time (since no one can register for their events until a workaround can be implemented). I am disappointed that this issue has not yet been resolved, and am seriously questioning our use of Flash in our development.

    Huge problem that has rendered many of our online training products useless.
    We run training for 52,000 employees worldwide, and have a customer base of over 500,000.
    This is threatening a serious level of revenue and we simply cannot ask customers to install a BETA version of Flash 11 as a workaround!

    This bug rendered most of our legacy games (published in Flash 6/AS1) useless. Although they were old they were still making money on a daily basis. Releasing a bug of this magnitude plays directly into the hands of Steve Jobs et al, and leaves company executives thinking "why are we using Flash again?". It's that serious.

    This bug has hit hard as others have stated. We have used flash as a very reliable platform and now we have thousands of courses which are being taken by students impacted by this bug.

    Please fix or at least communicate what is happening, so decisions can be made.

    Extremely Important.

    I work for a mortgage credit company and our homepage is built entirely in Flash and we have several calculation modules which are built in Flex (thus running in Flash) and none of these are currently available to our clients due to this bug.

    I highly recommend Adobe to stop distributing version 10.3.183.5 in order to minimize the impact of this bug.

    As others have mentioned, this bug is critical to our business. We have hundreds of clients using thousands of individual clips that are affected. The task to work around this issue is enormous.

    I wrote up and submitted a very detailed bug but it has been swallowed by the system.

    For us the issue is on every Windows platform, across all browsers. In a swf that uses a shared library, if the code to move along the timeline is either attached to a button or on the timeline itself, it will crash if it jumps to a section of timeline that contains a shared movieclip that has not been encountered yet. It will also crash if attempting to move backwards along the timeline.

    To work around the issue, you must either cut the linkage to the shared library or recode your interactions to use external functions.

    Please help!

    This is a very serious problem for our CRM application as well. I have been able to fix the problem by using the Flash 11 Beta download, but do not beleive that is a good response to our user community. It is extremely important to get a fix for 10.3.183.5, or to get a gold release date for Flash 11

    A fix for this bug needs to be released ASAP. Thousands of eLearning modules created with our authoring tool since 2004 and published by our clients to both LMS systems and web servers now won’t start because of this bug. We are helpless; even if we were able to implement a work-around in our product we will not be able to update the published content. Asking our clients to republish everything is not an attractive option. Hoping for some feedback soon from Adobe on this because fixed in version 11.0.1.98(beta) is not cutting it.

    Doing some tests I found that what does not work properly is the gotoAndPlay() function in the timeline with reference to any previous or subsequent frame. The only thing that works is gotoAndPlay(1). In other action, gotoAndPlay("begin") or gotoAndPlay(4) does not work. Any solution to this problem? Our website is based entirely in Flash and change hundreds of files not think it's a quick fix. We need an urgent solution because we have thousands of paying customers who visit our site daily.

    We develop educational games. We have hundreds of files affected by this bug. We have thousands of paying customers but we can not serve. The situation is untenable, our business will be in danger if Adobe does not fix the bug immediately. ***This bug is catastrophic***

    This bug makes our product unusable. We have many thousand users using our system (which is a financial system handling several hundred million pounds of orders each year), which uses flash as the UI.

    We do not use a pre-loader, we do however use a shared library and gotoAndPlay/Stop and this is the issue we experience with the screen going black and "Movie not loaded" displayed in the context menu.

    11 Beta 2 does resolve the problem for us, however this fix needs to be released in the very near future as we cannot tell our customers to upgrade to a Beta Player, nor is it realistically for them to stay on an older outdated and insecure version of the player.

    I second.. third.. and fourth the other votes here. I work for a company that develops e-learning, and this bug impacts our standard course navigation - reused across dozens of clients, hundreds of courses, and thousands of learners. This is a critical issue that must be resolved before the full release of Flash Player 11.

    We are an eLearning business serving thousands of users, all of our training material is delivered in Flash and this issue is and will continue to severely impact our users and our business, rendering out training unusable. This is therefore a CRITICAL issue.

    Providing a fix in a future release is fine as long as it is guaranteed that will be released within a small matter of days, otherwise a hotfix to version 10.3 should be released.

    The issue is not that this bug has occurred, these things do occasionally happen, but a speedy and definitive solution is essential to maintain confidence in the Flash Platform.

    We need to see this properly fixed in the 10 series of the player ASAP as my company have large quantities of published files which are affected by this bug.

    I also work in a large eLearning company and this bug also affects our costumers. We simply can't recommend our clients to upgrade to a beta version (v 11) of flash player. This fix must be included in the next patch of flash player.

    EXTREMELY CRITICAL! Threatens our business and seriously makes us consider our future use of Flash as a platform! Bugs like this simply CANNOT be allowed to pass through QA!

    I work for Pearson, one of the largest eLearning companies in the world and we deliver millions of tests every year with Flash. We are seeing this issue when loading static swf files into sub apps.

    I work at Mobiliza, a E-Learning office in Brazil. And all our courses with shared library are currently not working. Some of our clients are Volkswagen, Senac, Perdigão and so on.

    We are looking forward your answer.
