Title

[Platform_Android]choppy audio and video on xoom with android 4

Description

Problem Description: On the xoom (original model), with android 3.2, streaming video (particularly from amazon.com) worked fine. After the android 4.0 update and flash 11.1.112.61 install, both audio and video are choppy, making the streaming video unwatchable (for entertainment purposes).

Steps to Reproduce: An example is http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0071UYKG2/; this is a free video, although you have to log in with any amazon account to watch it. The HD version is very choppy in both audio and video; the standard def version is not as bad, but still no good.

Actual Result: Choppy audio and video when streaming from amazon.com.

Expected Result: Pretty pictures and soothing audio.

Any Workarounds: No

As noted, the problem is not with Android 3.x, but with the version of flash that runs on Android 4.x.

Functionality that worked great on 3.2 has vaporized in 4.0

If the issue is not with the Flash Player then whose issue is it?

What do you mean by "not this product"?

With ICS, we use Android frameworks' OpenMAX AL for hardware decoding of H264 videos.

Per Android documentation, they only guarantee support for Baseline profile encoded videos - http://developer.android.com/guide/appendix/media-formats.html

Amazon videos are Main or High profile videos and hence get software decoded which is why they are choppy.

Same problem here on my Xoom running ICS. Very poor quality video when playing Amazon instant video: obviously there is no hardware acceleration.

    I'm running Flashplayer version 11.1.115.7

This is still under "To track"!
Just how many votes do you need to get off your backsides a treat it as something you must do?
Or at least be candid, and say that you won't be doing anything on it as a matter of choice/strategy and close the bug.
    This is getting ridiculous.

Ceding control of the mobile web market to Apple by discontinuing development for Flash was bad enough but not working on fixing this bug is simply bad business.

There's a reason more and more people are opting for Android on the mobile platform, and that reason is Flash. When I access the web via my Xoom, I want to experience the whole web, not just the crippled, Apple-ized version of it.

Link to transformer prime thread where they can't play content full screen either in flash without it dieing do to CPU load:

Since I did the initial testing that showed that hardware acceleration isn't working properly on tegra processors under ICS (and possibly isn't working on other processors as well). Figure would come over here and post more detailed results.

This is not just an issue with the Xoom. On the transformer prime forums people with transformer prime have been complaining they can't view full screen Amazon Prime or HBO2GO content. They are little better off as they have more CPU core's, so things work small screen for them just not full screen.

Its common issue with flash accross amazon prime video, HBO2GO, and Hulu plus, testing on two identical tablets. One with ICS and flash 11.1.112.61 and one running honeycomb 3.2.6 with flash 11.1.111.5 shows that there is a major problem here:

    http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0071UYKG2/

    Testing Procedure:
Hook tablet up to a PC in USB debugging mode. Using adb from PC execute
    adb shell top -t > top.txt
This executes top command on android tablet and tells it to show CPU load by thread, not by process. This allows us to see the flash player threads.

    Tablet #1:
Xoom WIFI, HC 3.2.6 with Flash 11.1.111.5
    URL above, in landscape orientation
Video plays smoothly, can plug in HDMI cable and view perfectly on TV. Moving to full screen mode works well.

    Tablet #2:
Xoom WIFI, ICS 4.0.3 with Flash 11.1.112.61
Same URL as above, in landscape orientation
Video is choppy, out of sync with audio. Plugging HDMI cable into Xoom causes flash to crash.
Moving to full screen mode also causes flash to have problems. Audio play in background but no video. CPU pegs FULL.

The reigning theory on the motorola support forum is that the latest flash player is not using hardware acceleration, whereas the previous one (the one with android 3.2) did use hardware acceleration.

Platform is Xoom with android 4.0.3, pushed by motorola early January (no dropdown for 4.x, so I used 3.x).

    Browser is stock android browser.

I marked "Frequency" as "All users" although that means "all xoom users with android 4.0.3 that watch streaming videos from amazon.com".

I marked "Failure Type" as "Non Functioning" because videos from amazon.com are unwatchable. Other video sources work fine.

This issue negatively affects ALL Flash video under Android 4.0.x, not just Amazon videos as mentioned in the last comment. Other apps such as HBO2GO, Hulu Plus and web embedded video has major choppiness and lag. This issue has basically rendered our tablets running ICS useless for running Flash videos. Please correct this issue so we can continue to rely on Adobe's Flash and add-on products for home and office productivity.

Xoom doesn't play silverlight but used to play Flash OK. Why do I need to buy 5 different devices to be able to view each different streaming video technology? If Flash is no longer being supported on the Xoom, I might as well buy a Windows OS Mobile device and at least watch Silverlight video streams.

I am having the same issue on my motorola xoom. I have all of the latest updates for OS as well as flash. I am trying to watch videos from skillcapped.com, standard run of the mill streamed videos. I get maybe a frame every 1-2 secs, however the audio plays normaly, so after a few mins the video and audio are far out of sync.

I am having similar issues with flash, on transformer prime running ics. My tablet with honeycomb had a much better flash. Flash for ics is completely crippled and has much lower utility and functionality. Many websites run much slower now, also online videos are a terrible viewing experience now compared to previous flash on honeycomb. Please fix this. Things should improve with newer versions, not get worse.
