The number of mobile devices that are using windows platform is increasing; look at the Nokia Lumina devices, HTC, Samsung, Blu, and others. And with windows 10 coming, I think it is time to make AIR useful for windows devices!

Microsoft just released it's new universal Windows 10 platform for developers:

Now would be a perfect time for Adobe to announce it will be working on a Windows 10 publisher for AIR!

Microsoft will unify Windows Phone and Windows (desktop/tablet) OS. Could you imagine the potential?

A single development platform that could support:

    - iOS (iPhone/iPad/iPod/iWatch)
    - Browsers
    - Android (Smartphones/Tablets/Watches)
    - Windows Phone (Smartphones)
    - Windows 10 Modern Apps (desktop/tablet/xbox)

    It could be unbeliavable powerfull!

That is an amazing news, Gregoretti!

Let's create a positive moviment, and support Adobe's Team what ever they need us, to test and give very good quality feedback. Windows Phone leads in many countries: http://www.windowsphone-news.com/windows-phone-leads-in-24-countries/
As we expect our solution to go global, its necessary to compete in all channels. Here in Brazil, we have the 4th largest ITC marketing in the world and the market share of WP is bigger than iOS.

Quick update, seems Windows RT is dead (as expected):
    http://mashable.com/2015/02/04/windows-rt-dead/

So unless I am mistaken, Adobe AIR now supports all the major platforms (Surface Pro runs regular Windows as it seems) - Well, maybe not Linux but Flash works well in Chrome.

So @pete shand, maybe you should have a talk with your client :)

Update: We won the project I mentioned in my last post, but because Windows Phone is a requirement unfortunately we need to use xamarin studio (C#). Come on Adobe! I know it's going to involve a big investment, but it's worth it to keep AIR in the develop once, deploy everywhere game!

My first thought is that because windows phone OS has such a low market share why bother right? and if it was up to me that'd be the end of it... but the sad truth is that clients are often pretty stupid when it comes to stats and just want their apps to work on everything. I've got a big mobile project on the horizon. Air is the obvious choice of Tech, but with talk about needing to support Windows Phone it's going to be a hard sell against something like Xamarin :/ I'm sure it's easier said that done, but adding Windows Phone support would go a long way in securing AIR as a truly cross platform technology.

Vote to the Windows Phone support.

I own a software company along 15 years. I created a healthcare startup at this year, that won a 3th place in a national startups' competition in Brazil, supported by the Government. We participate of a Innovation and Entrepreneurship Program at Stanford University.

I just wrote this background because our App was entirely developed using Sencha Touch, PhoneGap, Html5 based. And, right now, we are recreating everything in Adobe Air. First because gamification is a natural path to engaging the new generation and it includes corporate Apps. We spend an entire year to develop the App in Html5 and, right now, we have 20% of the application, even more fun with animation and sounds, in just a couple weeks with Adobe Air. It's an amazing technology, the Object Oriented language is powerful and the combination with Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, even Audition makes all sense. We are Creative Cloud customers, and if we could bet in the Adobe Air future, and in its wide cross platform support, we can be customer for ever.

    10:55:56 AM GMT+00:00 Nov 14, 2014

    @Anton Azarov

At the beginning of this petition we feared that Adobe was not fully committed to the project.

As time passes we had many signs (iOS x64 support, Intel x86 support) that the AIR project is still alive.

We trust Microsoft and Adobe (as major companies) more than Xamarin for long term application development, maybe we're wrong but it was our choice.

  • Anton Azarov

    9:05:17 AM GMT+00:00 Nov 14, 2014

    @raffo80,

For example Xamarin allow to use .NET C# on iOS, Android, Mac and Windows. Why you still not there?

  • Raffaele De Falco

    7:30:55 AM GMT+00:00 Nov 14, 2014

With the recent open-sourcing of .NET and the announcement of future support of .NET for Android and iOS in mid-2015 (plus WP8, of course), seems that we have a valid alternative.

Adobe should hurry up, if NET becomes open source it can reach places that AIR runtime won't be allowed to.

Hearing about the momentum and increase in Air developers is simply fantastic particularly because it mirrors my own experience. I've been freelancing at a large company that hired me to "patch" their enterprise APP whilst another team are rebuilding in JS/HTML5. After 2 months, and showing them what we can now do with AIR, instead of patching, I'm rebuilding and they are adding manpower to my project, The clincher was FalconJX: https://blogs.apache.org/flex/entry/apache_flexjs_0_0_1 - the fear of wasted development is now gone.

Personally, I see this as the classic American success story - the underdog, fighting its way back into the hearts and minds of the people -- developers. There is no better tool for cross platform development - a solid language, with mature frameworks and incredible FLEXibility.

Windows 8 will happen when the market share increases but I absolutely agree, we all need to do what we can - this will be a fantastic OS to include in our platform list.

Btw, take a look at this: http://blog.jetbrains.com/idea/2013/01/how-is-flash-doing/ - I hear that the graph is still showing steady growth!

    Power to you @flexengineer.

    9:23:08 PM GMT+00:00 Jun 30, 2014

I got some inside information from Adobe, it seems that the show blocker for AIR on Windows 8 is a combination of issues: Adobe does not seem to be motivated to allocate the funds necessary to port AIR to Windows 8 Phone, probably in part due to the still low market share, and in part due to the "cheaper is better" mentality that has rotten the company, but none of the above is written in stone! The matter is however worsen by the fact that Microsoft has some interpreted code requirement that would make AIR on Windows 8 even more costly to implement.

The good news is, I was told that reaching out to our contacts at Microsoft and voice the fact that we need AIR could help trigger some executive pressure, which is also being attempted internally by out friends at Adobe. Furthermore, I was told "if we can get MS to relax the interpreted code requirements and allow our JIT, then we have a legitimate chance". I am conscious of the fact that there are also some performance underlying issues with this, and I am actively assessing them but what all of this tells me is that we just need to open the dialog ourselves, take over some of the talking, and start discussing course of action with the people in charge at both Adobe and Microsoft.

So this is what I suggest: let's stop winning all over social media and on Adobe forums by calling AIR dead or shooting Adobe, which only makes the dark side of the force stronger and undermine our chances to have the company pump more money. Instead, let's reach out to everyone we know at Microsoft and let them know we need AIR on Windows 8 phone.

We have a momentum here, passing the one billion install trees-hold surprised Adobe's itself and the company has observed a "tremendous" increase in AIR adoption. Now is the time to leverage that momentum, we really can get Adobe to pump more money and establish AIR as the de facto standard for cross platform application development once and for all.

This is the social age, peer to peer is the new corporate power. We can win this, we can beat the dark side of the force (Apple, along with Adobe's Indian management), anyone else standing in our way, and re-energizing the bright side of the force at Adobe that truly wants this to succeed (we still have a lot of friends there, especially in the San Francisco offices).

I decided to walk the talk and start trying to do something, they say the world is not changed by opinion but by example, so please check this tweet and help me spread the word by re-tweeting or just posting your own messages to Microsoft:

    https://twitter.com/flexengineer/status/483795674165567488

Let's take it to the cyber streets, let's show the world who runs this show, and let's so do now. Please post and re-post on Twitter, Facebook, Google+, Tumblr and so on. Email your contacts at Microsoft, text your pals, ask for support... do whatever you can!!!

Disclaimer: I did not get the information in this message from Chris, I only CCed him in my tweet as the current product manager for the runtimes. Please do not ask who provided the information, I won't disclose it. You will have to just trust me.

  • Heidi.INC

    7:10:30 PM GMT+00:00 Jun 22, 2014

Adobe Air and flash will soon be history. So just move on, already. The most recent updates for Samsung Devices for Android's makes Adobe Air useless and crash. Amazon is moving towards UNITY and to them Adobe Air is yesterdays news. Barnes & Noble has just signed an agreement with Samsung to launch a new Samsung Nook device for their app store, which most like will not support Adobe Air. So we are left begging Adobe Air support for Windows 8. Now here is the kick in our butts, Windows is uniting with UNITY for cross platform launch. So it's not good for any flash developers and Adobe Air.

Adobe, isn't your gain to make Adobe AIR for all platforms?

yes we know that WP is at it's begining, but is MS and not some obscure company...

plus with the WP 8.1 is as complex/good as other OSs, also smooth like butter

waiting with about 15 Adobe AIR apps

or adobe AIR is direct competitor to silverlight and therefore MS won't support Adobe and block the Adobe AIR for WP?

  • caio canalli

    3:39:24 AM GMT+00:00 Apr 16, 2014

Windows Phone 8.1 is a revolution for the platform. Apart from Nokia, Samsung now seems to be seeing its importance and rumors suggest Sony as the next manufacturer to enter the game. I think Adobe has sufficient arguments to construct a version of Adobe Air for Windows Phone. +1

  • Nils Berghs

    8:42:28 AM GMT+00:00 Apr 14, 2014

We are currently planning some new cross platform tools and Adobe AIR didn't even make it to the 'long list'.

'phonegap' did, but it didn't made it to the short list (lack of functionalities). So no money for Adobe.

On the shortlist Xamarin (mono), Unity and Qt.

Feel free to share your comments on this tools (or suggest others). As nobody at Abobe seems to read the bugbase (or care about the only item with a decent number of votes) I don't think they would mind.

Adobe says that they're not supporting Modern UI platform because of their little market share. We've learned that platform success is determined by the application developed for if. Give us the proper tool & we'll make Windows 8 succeed. Adobe will be part of this through AIR.
Does Adobe want to hear his market? We're the market.

There has been a lot of discussion about AIR last week. Chris Campbell wrote a post about the "Latest Updates on Flash Runtime" (http://blogs.adobe.com/flashplayer/2014/03/latest-updates-on-the-flash-runtime.html). It does not specifically talk about WP in his post, but he did respond to one comment with this, and unfortunately it doesn't look like it is going to happen soon :

    Hi Clark,

“Does Adobe agree that targeting new Platforms, such as Windows 8 Metro, Windows Phone, or any other future Operating System is going to requirement investment of the like that Adobe is no longer committed to?”

We would not agree with this statement. Instead we need to weigh the benefit and cost of both implementation and the ongoing support for a new (and still relatively small market share) platform and set of devices. Our current test matrix of platforms and browsers is already very expansive, adding platforms/devices is not trivial. If we can make compelling business reasons, we would consider it in the future.

I vote up for this feature.
Currently Windows 8 interface is present in 3 different kind of devices: smartphones, tables & desktop computers. Potencially is a platform to reach an important marketshare, whose quota is increasing.
Besides the support of Modern UI, AIR should give tools & components to optimize the liquid & fluid user experience.

Well, if Adobe doesn't know to monetize Air they could either ask for a licence fee, 100~200$/year would be fine IMHO, or require some fixed amount to implement this feature and we could start a fundraising campaing.

Some people would look bad at a company like Adobe for taking the second option, but it's just another valid option to consider, and some features in the past were paid in private by some other companies, so it would be similar but just public.

Just trying to give some ideas.

    @Pippoflash - I completely agree.

For those threatening to leave the platform, just think about this - remember back several years ago when frameworks were quickly evolving, when a re-write every two years just a fact of life - well, that's not the case today. Now we have a remarkably stable and incredibly powerful platform that cut its teeth in the ENTERPRISE. Just appreciate the value of so many brilliant people paid very well, who have helped shape the direction of this remarkable platform. No longer are we facing a potential "Flash Next" disaster - our code base will be solidly reusable for a long time to come.

With Adobe's focus on gaming and video (hum, hum DRM!!!!) - we are promised an incredibly fast and versatile UX environment with Enterprise class features, security and frameworks. Let's not forget ANEs! What more do you actually want from an APP - mobile or desktop?

Your other "development choices" will be more expensive in the long run and likely less feature rich today or at the very least more complex to develop. The companies with engineers for each native platform will be outpaced by our smaller and more focused teams of developers.

Yes we want support for more platforms but let's just remember, right now we're talking about a platform with barely 3% market share in the US - granted well over 10% in other countries - but we want this fantastic pace of development from the Air team to continue for where our real users are, iOS and Android. Let's not forget about Blackberry - berry who?

Have faith it will happen - it just makes sense that Windows will be supported as their market share increases. Hopefully the majority can ride out the need for Windows mobile support for the next several months.. it will be worth the wait - you know it!

Guys it is not simple to implement a brand new platform in AIR compiler. There are reasons why Adobe is not doing this right now. Lets ask for this. Lets vote and push. But there is no need to be outraged and insult Adobe staff. We all love the Flash platform, and we want it alive and rocking. So let's try to be supportive. Flash and AIR team are doing a great job and at incredible speed. We will all be happy when windows phone will be implemented. Let's be patient and support the platform as much as we can in the meantime. Love to all.

It is ridiculous how Adobe don't give a shit about the opinion of the people who uses their stuff, who actually makes money for Adobe. I mean, I don't see a conversation here, only a big bunch of requests, no reaction, however as I see this site is the company's own bug tracker page, what is unacceptable for me. 473 votes at the moment. Not 20 or 50, but 473 and it increases every day. I decided I'm going to drop Flash from my everyday used techniques. I guess lot of people will do the same in the near future.

October 11th, 2013? 6 Months of voting and we're around 450 votes.... What do you think adobe is waiting for 9000? IT IS CLEAR, this is NOT going to happen. I remember voting when it was round say 50 or so, thinking OMG this has WAY more votes than any other feature/bug ever, surely this is going to happen.... pshhh

It honestly seems like the ONLY purpose voting here is serving is to continue to FLOOD my inbox with an update every single time someone's voted or written a comment. (458 votes + 246notes = 704 email updates).... Yep thats right, 704 emails I've gotten in my inbox about people WANTING the Windows Phone 8 support for AIR. I could turn them off... of course... but since it's all or nothing, I would then I lose the ability to track the other 6-7 bugs I've posted and am daily following/hoping for updates.

If AIR had WP and Win RT support these evaluations would be very easy, lets continue with AIR.

    Adobe,

Look, it's as simple as this:

There are multiple engines and frameworks competing for the same sector. One of the key decisions points (if not the most important) is the revenue one can derive from the apps. Not to be able to publish on Windows mobile devices means significantly reduced potential revenues.

So, either you start supporting Windows devices, or developers and companies will choose a vendor who does.

Hope AIR doesn't go same way on phones as on TV
Recently posted at top of Samsung TV developer site:

    Warning

We have been alerted that Adobe will no longer continue to support Flash on Samsung Smart TVs and BluRay players. As a result, Flash engines will not be supported in 2015 Samsung products. Going forward, Flash-related features will be excluded from SDKs released. Although Flash engines will remain to be equipped on existing Samsung products, including 2014 models, there will be no technical support from either Samsung or Adobe. Accordingly, any applications developed with Flash Air or Flash Player will no longer be acceptable. Samsung recommends using either HTML 5 or Javascript based applications if the application in question is Flash-based. Beginning on February 4, 2014, any Flash-based application, including any updated versions of such will not be acceptable for submission.

In Europe, it is a rapidly growing number of users, e.g.: Germany 9% market share (+ 5% through the year, and iOS -1.6%!), UK 12%, France 11% .. This is not insignificant operating system!

I think this is becoming an increasing necessity for us developers and adobe as more and more windows devices are being used.

Cordova has major issues across devices and AIR remains one of the most stable ways for cross platform development.

Considering Air apps already run on windows 8 I doubt it would be as hard to integrate into the windows app store as on bb.

    People look at this: http://www.comscore.com/Insights/Press_Releases/2013/11/comScore_Reports_September_2013_U.S._Smartphone_Subscriber_Market_Share

When MS actually have a market share worth worrying about and WP9 is making the in roads that everyone is hoping for (particularly because of the European market support) Adobe will work with MS like they have done for years and we'll all be able to enjoy our APPs on another solid platform.

I've been working on a few complex JS projects recently and I can tell you, AIR is so much more mature than ANYTHING out there right now. Providing Adobe keep up the same pace they've been pushing for the past 6 months - we'll stay way ahead.

I think what is needed is for Adobe to let us know what their plans are relating to AIR on Windows Phone X?

We are all trying to run businesses based on AIR development and there are more and more requests to develop across all major platforms.
People are going to have to choose the tools to fit the requirements of customers even if we would REALLY like to continue to develop AIR apps.

Certainly if Adobe were to announce that they were going to support a version of Windows Phone when the platform stabilizes and is more consistent across devices, that would go a long way towards keeping up our confidence in AIR.

If Adobe need to find a way to monetize AIR then do some research on solving that, there are a lot of us still out here that wish to use the product.

The web is and will always be built by individuals os small groups of people. Online it's never the mega-corporations who deliver content or be best apps, it's the small studio or individuals.

MS is dropping support for Windows phone 8, some time in the middle of 2014. By the end of the year it will be defunct.

Regardless, Nokia alone sold 8 million WP8 phones. That is 8 million potential AIR customers. Maybe a drop in the bucket compared to the entire market, but as a developer I am super happy to have 100k customers.

WPhone 9 is coming out in 2014 would be nice to see Air on it.

Sorry that was wrong link :D lol... By this link I showed to my friend that Adobe Air can't be used for StageVideo > Stage3D for VideoTexture with good FPS because due weak CPU/GPU of mobile devices. And as proof I showed to him that url about Unity3D that don't support video texture on mobile also :)

Here is the correct link http://www.kxnet.com/story/24399042/compass-intelligence-announces-winners-of-the-2014-mobility-awards-in-wireless-m2m-and-green-technology

    @D&M, Heidi.INC
A perfect summary and description of our situation; I couldn't agree more!
The only thing I'd like to add:

We also used our reputation in convincing customers to trust us and Adobe.
I start feeling bad about it. A VERY bad trend; for us and Adobe.

If we do not see clear and strong commitments and statements in the near future, this will have a big impact on how we'll treat other Adobe products also.

It is difficult and takes time to win loyal customers, but it is easy to loose them. And behind most of us is a big group of customers, so our decisions will have a big impact on Adobe.

At least I'm loosing patience (although in general I'm a naive optimist)
    Regards
    Hans

To Adobe Management: Kindle Fire HDX & Windows 8 Mobile devices Adone Air support

Adobe Air at one time a very promising technology most of us Flash developers gladly welcomed and have used widely. How ever Adobe is loosing it's glamour and popularity by self destruction.

Kindle Fire HDX- Probably the most popular tablet in the world backed by a powerful, highly adored and loved company (Amazon). Well again Adobe dropped the ball, no Adobe Air update for the Kindle Fire HDX. We didn't realize our 100 plus apps on Amazon wouldn't work on it until our customers started complaining about it. We tested the device and it requested an Adobe Air version not available for the device. So we had to do a mad rush to update our apps captive runtime and compile Adobe Air in the APK and got it to work on the HDX. Granted it was maybe not Adobe's fault because in reality all Amazon had to do was approve the same versions already in the market for download on the HDX, but again why didn't Adobe ask Amazon to preload the latest version of Adobe Air on Amazon's latest HDX tablets.

Other issues being reported by our customers are from Adobe Air not working on generic tablets and making the apps crash. This issue also occurring even on some top brands like the latest Samsung Galaxy Tab 2014 version.

Then there is the issue with NO Adobe Air launch for Windows 8 Mobile devices, even after many years of promises (from Adobe) that it is coming. We as Flash developers got sort of trapped into Flash with Adobe Air and now what? We are loosing tremendous revenue possibilities in the Windows 8 Markets. Keep in mind Microsoft is not going anywhere and it will succeed in the mobile device markets. It's too big a company with even a bigger following and fan base than the all power empire called Amazon.

We founded our company over ten years ago and have spent tens of thousands of dollars in Adobe products and have always loved the great many products Adobe has to offer. How ever being loyal to a company doesn't always get you growth when a company refuses to grow itself out of it's dilemmas it might be having. So we are wondering and strongly considering saying goodbye to Adobe and moving on...

We can no longer afford to be the last ones to arrive at the party... So our beloved Adobe what will be your response?

    Regards,

    D&M.

It would be helpful knowing what "delays" (at least) the process:
    - Is it Adobe's policy
    - lack of resources
    - estimated efforts
    - technical challenges
    - 3rd party (Microsoft) road blocks
    - others?

Is there any chance in future (you'd never say no...)?
    Thanks!

    Hello Adobe.

Please add Adobe Air support to the Windows Phone platform.

I just got a Windows phone thinking that it was there already, and it is not.

The Windows 8 mobile is a new and undeveloped real estate that is growing, it would be great to add killer apps to the ecosystem.

Are Adobe interested in Developers any more? The ethos changed once adobe took over Macromedia. There is a total disinterest in Flash Technologies.

WHY? For some areas of application the Flash Platform is the only game in town.
Once a Web or RIA application is beyond a certain scale Actionscript with unit testing is the only way to go.

Through a lack of vision and direction Adobe are losing ground on one of the best multi platform technologies around. With real vision they could have dominated the mobile space toolchain for years to come.

@flexengineer - very commendable and very true - just look at the maturity of the frameworks available to us - Robotlegs (the king!), Parsley and even Cairngorm3. Years of enterprise development have given us a super solid foundation to build upon. Whatever we can't achieve in AS3 we can do with an ANE?! How ridiculously cool is that!!

I just hope that Adobe can catch the eye of enough developers, particularly in the lucrative gaming industry, to replenish the ranks. What Adobe engineers have achieved with Stage3D is quite incredible - not to mention the framework support of Starling, Feathers and Away3D. There's no better platform and that's just fact. It's such a shame that the bad press from a couple of years ago is still shrouding this undeniable truth.

HTML5 and JS still have a LONG way to go before reaching the maturity, stability and performance of our newest Air 4. Concurrency with mobile workers anyone!!

This is a very exciting time for Air, particularly Air Mobile developers.

I'm the first one to want WinRT support in AIR, its market share will grow whether we like it or not (however not like MS wants...), and therefore it's imperative that Adobe does this possible. Also, I agree that Adobe should improve its communication skills, but I don't get how people can complain about the time and money invested on using it, seriously, I still wonder how Adobe get profit from the AIR SDK... their own applications? some AAA developer companies invest on Adobe so they add certain features? some sort of contract with the Scaleform guys? They have Flash CC, but I doubt many developers use it for mobile apps. Of course MS would see in this scenario a way to attract more developers to their platform, and could invest resources on Adobe, but this wouldn't change the overall scenario.

Adobe could allow the developer community to contribute somehow to get this feature done sooner or later, although I guess that without some access to part of the source code whatever it is done, it would be some sort of workaround (although transforming ABC to WinRT doesn't necessarily have to be one...). Also, I bet most of us wouldn't care if Win8 support wouldn't support a lot of features like camera at first.

I've thought for months that it's entirely feasible to use a modified Jangaroo (or similar) source, so that it converts Flash to JavaScript with the needed WinRT calls, and then use the ordinary MS compiler, as JS is one of the languages you can use. But I don't have the time to try it out.

    @poltergeist_
    >I was pondering over this, should it not be possible to create a desktop ANE for creating a metro UI app?

I don't think so, a Win8 app runs on a completely different and restrained environment, so even if that would be possible, I think you'd have to develop the whole app on the ANE side.

  • flexengineer

    1:11:48 AM GMT+00:00 Dec 12, 2013

@Drew I agree with you, even though we must make sure to voice our opinion and cast our votes, we must also admit that no matter the noise and HTML5 scam, Adobe has pushed AIR and Flash for that matter in the right direction with significant effort and regular advances, let's not shoot each other in foot shall we? I also invite you to read my note on Facebook, especially the comments:
    https://www.facebook.com/notes/stephane-beladaci/one-code-any-screen-develop-once-deploy-everywhere-is-a-reality/10152672812579068

And I am taking upon myself to start a myself scale campaign to counter all the HTML5 fanboys and vendors who are hurting us much more than any of Adobe past failure, they are the problem now that Jobs is gone. So if you know about HTML5 and JS and want to join me, the idea is to answer every single article, blog post and Tweet about HTML5 with the truth about JavaScript failure and how much sense Flash/Flex/AIR makes for app today, especially with workers bringing us at parity with native apps.

To be fair - Adobe Air (and Air for Mobile) is being heavily developed - check the labs page http://labs.adobe.com - and Flex has never been more alive since it went open source (an excellent decision to ensure Flex doesn't die - 4.11 was recently released). Adobe are staying true to their word and are supporting Flex with every Air release - again, check the labs page!

    Look at the current stats:

    http://www.comscore.com/Insights/Press_Releases/2013/11/comScore_Reports_September_2013_U.S._Smartphone_Subscriber_Market_Share

Would you invest your resources to support a platform that has just 3.1% of the market or would you pour all your resources into making sure you stay ahead with the top 2?

Air rocks - we know it - and I'm betting that there will be the support when the time is right!

    Have faith people!

@Jing Yuan, can you develop why you "can't" provide support on this device? Not being able to should be explained, is it because you are focusing resources on other features of R&D aspects, if so which exactly? Or is Microsoft not willing to work with you on this? You guys really have to work on your communication and PR otherwise the whole technology stack is going to fade away and it is not wit bogus HTML5 that Adobe is going to keep being relevant in the application marketplace, I can tell you that much as I have since 2010, blogging 3 years ahead of time about the fact everyone will fail with it, confirmed by Facebook CEO, LinkedIn and Google execs this and last year.

A Windows Phone support would be of great value for Adobe AIR!
I'm currently working on 3 apps and many others are very likely to be approved by my clients whom are starting to ask for Win Phone portings...
Here in Europe Windows phones sales are growing rapidly and this feature could surely drive more developers to consider Adobe AIR as the main platform to develop mobile apps. (btw I live and work in Italy)

  • jaybe75

    2:13:27 AM GMT+00:00 Nov 5, 2013

Absolutely! Get this done Adobe. AIR is a must on Windows Phone 8. Would be great with Windows RT support as well, with captive runtime build option for all platforms. One ring to rule them all...

This business decision should be a no-brainer for those Adobe-people in charge...

    2:14:06 PM GMT+00:00 Oct 30, 2013

this would be good. right now, microsoft is partnering with unity and corona to spur on developers to their platform. adobe, this seems like an opportunity to breath some life into AIR, which still has a huge following (you seem to not know about) and still performs amazingly well against the new bread of platforms out there

FYI Adobe, you actually had a really good showing in this list: http://www.research2guidance.com/r2g/Cross-Platform-Tool-Benchmarking-2013.pdf despite not trying very hard.

Also, FYI, for those at Adobe that may not know: there is a much bigger development community for AIR outside San Francisco (all over the world in fact) that are still pushing AS3 and AIR development to the limits and doing amazing things. If you could partner with Microsoft, let them help you evolve AIR to support Windows Phone (and RT/Real Surface Apps) a lot of developers would be really happy!

Another note for whoever at Adobe is listening: we realize this is about monetization for you, i'm sure there are ways to add value to the AIR platform with your new creative cloud services. let me know if you need help figuring that out.

the web is more and more live and audio/video...live is media server (adobe media, wowza...), and media server is rtmp/sharedObjects, only usable with AS3... Air purpose is to be cross plateform...and the flex sdk is being considerably developped by apache...so yes, air for WP is much required, we shouldn't even ask for this :D
    thx !

  • kalin_imeran_arxondes

    10:05:46 AM GMT+00:00 Aug 19, 2014

AIR is a tremendously powerful technology, and support for all flavours of a major platform provider such as Microsoft ought to go without saying, since it's a win-win-win situation (Adobe, Microsoft, developers).

  • Станислав Смагин

    12:22:15 AM GMT+00:00 Aug 19, 2014

market of windows 8 is increasing day by day

  • Russell Wakely

    8:32:09 AM GMT+00:00 Aug 18, 2014

Windows phone 8 support is vital for the perception of air as a technology going forward. Air is a superb cross-technology platform, and is far from dead, as many ill-wishers claim: on the contrary, the online community of app developers is thriving. But eventually, it wont be ok to not be able to target windows phone8, because the market will be too big. Smaller companies adopting air, will start to drop it, for the simple reason that they want a cross platform technology, and air wont be sufficient for their needs.

I've heard this quote on the starling forum, attributed to Govinda Gupta
"New compiler is very easy to work with in comparison to old compiler so it will make life easier to support new platform."

I would love to hear an update: at least a hint from adobe or the air team, on how current development relates to WP8 supprt. At least some, any feedback whatsoever from adobe.

Please support Windows phones! Supporting only iOS and Android is no longer good enough to make AIR stand out. It is so important for Adobe to win the battle for cross-platform mobile app deployment options! You have a large captive group of ActionScript developers who are on the fence, but will be willing to sign up with a permanent Creative Cloud subscription the instant you support this. You will make millions of dollars off of us, and we will be happy to pay you. Please do it, for your own sakes, not just ours!

We still believe in the strength of this platform (vs HTML5) but the lack of compatibility with modern Windows Phone is becoming every day a bigger problem and is bringing us to start thinking to port all our software base to other technologies.

The most wanted feature for AIR right now. According to some stats, Windows Phone is getting near 10% of market share and Adobe (nor we - developers), can't ignore that anymore.

  • Overflow1984

    4:56:02 AM GMT+00:00 Jun 19, 2014

This is definately something that should be worked on. had this been in place, you would have a massive lead on the realative new comers to cross platform, such as Xamarin or Telerik. The fact that you are in a position to provide native performance leave you miles ahead of 'translator/interpretors'

Fundamentally the impact is that WP8 is now gaining traction and without your support, I need to write applications twice.

AIR for windows 8! We're losing out on so many potential customers.

  • MurariM.

    6:32:37 AM GMT+00:00 Jun 2, 2014

With Windows8 emerging as one of the competitors in the mobile market, its ripe-time Adobe should take a leap to support Windows8 in Adobe AIR. One mistake of not supporting Apple devices for flash has already cost the Flash community a lot. Another mistake of not supporting Windows8 can drown the whole Flash developer community. Adobe Flash and Adobe AIR are great products, please don't drown them with such Stupidity.
    Sincerely
    A Flex Developer

When developing mobile first HTML 5 is not a good solution for complex applications, the rise of Windows 8 has just begun. Microsoft will not be left behind when creating software echo-systems. Adobe has a real chance at being the only company to bridge all three of the big players with AIR, if not we will have HTML 5 and browser wars all over again. In this Adobe can only lose.

In Europe, Windows Phone is a must for a cross platform mobile application development environment.
Kantar Worldpanel Research revealed on January 2014 that Windows mobile European market share doubled in one year, reaching 10% by the end of 2013.
According to IDC's Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker (Feb 2014), Windows Phone's will be the only mobile platform to increase its global market share, rising from 3.9% this year to 7% percent in 2018.

HTML5 spec is still a long ways off from being final. Especially since Microsoft, Apple, Google and other big players seem to want to mold it to their vision of what the spec should be. AIR, Flex & Actionscript all have a rightful place as being the most robust and feature-complete cross-platform development platform. Please continue that legacy by providing support for Windows Phone 8.

I would have had a Windows phone long ago, if AIR had supported it, the phone is worth nothing without AIR.

Many public schools are buying windows tablets. We are optimizing for iOS and Android but would like to offer the app via Adobe Air to Windows mobile. Actually we work on some multi platform application with Adobe Air. We have clients for Android and iOS and now we are looking to go on Windows Phone platform. Do we need to change Air to something else to go on windows? But it's better just to rewrite the whole app with another technology than Air. html5? Microsoft just released it's new universal Windows 10 platform for developers:
    http://dev.windows.com/en-US/windows-10-developer-preview-tools
Now would be a perfect time for Adobe to announce it will be working on a Windows 10 publisher for AIR!

I also think that it will be really nice to have Adobe Air support on WP platform as this will make it more true-multiplatform solution. And much easier to convince clients to switch from native iOS/Android/WP development.

But what I do have are a very particular set of skills; skills I have acquired over a very long career. If you support WP9 when it launches in April, that'll be the end of it. But if you don't, I will not look for you, I will not pursue you. I will go elsewhere.

My current pipeline takes care of iOS and Android. As windows is taking up a considerable share of the market, I'm having to think about how I can easily port my games onto that platform with the least amount of problems. The demand for true cross platform app development is growing, without a presence in windows it becomes harder to sell AIR to clients as the holy grail for mobile app development.

Adobe has a huge community of mobile developers who have invested in Adobe as Adobe has in them, hopefully there is enough traction in these votes to mobilize both sides to get this going.

Windows is a fast growing platform, it has the best sofware team in the world, the OS is very intuitive and is very easy to use for nontechnical persons, it has somehow a restictive hardware (CPU+GPU+display resolution, like Apple iOS) which is good for experience, design and debug.
Our clients (i am working at SENIOR INTERACTIVE a romanian web company, i think now we are the biggest in the market) are requesting more and more windows 8 apps as a completion for the android and ios apps, we mostly develop mobile app with adobe air since we have customized graphics and unusual client requests.
Windows store is a very young market where it could be done a lot, it's a pitty not let such a great and creative comunity such as the flash developer comunity to develop and promote adobe products.

Supporting Windows phone 8 and future versions will help us reach everyone with one code base. Microsoft is getting closer to having a solid OS that runs on all devices (phones, tablets, laptops, powerbooks, desktops) and once they get that down (most likely with the next version) then they will probably gain market share pretty fast since companies still use Windows. Companies just didn't make the jump to Windows 8 because Windows 8 is not an improvement over Windows 7 as far as business productivity is concerned. But, if the next version is an improvement then getting employees windows phones to go along with their powerbook will make sense from an IT perspective and I believe this is where Microsoft will take a bite out of the market share and get people using their phones. And, at that point Adobe Air will be pretty much the best development platform if it supports windows phones because developing apps with three different code bases (iOS, Android, Windows) is not an option for most developers and companies.

The Window Phone 8 market, while small, is showing signs of growth and showing it can be a profitable platform. Several other popular SDKs already have or have announced support for WinPhone8 and it would be detrimental to all current AIR developers, and deterring to any potential new AIR developers, if AIR was late to the "Party" or, even worse, never showed up!

AIR is certainly one of the best cross-platform techno out there, or at least one with the most widespread adoption, but it cannot target Windows Phone yet.

Developing a Windows Phone toolchain for AIR would require manpower and money, obviously. But I would totally pay for this and I'm probably not the only one, take our money ffs! It's not our fault if Adobe's marketing team isn't able to find a way to monetize AIR.

    My vote for this.
I think Adobe should work with Microsoft to bring AIR technology to its emerging mobile operating system. And maybe Adobe should find some method to directly fund AIR platform, so they can allocate more resources to further develop the technology in their weak points.

no serious cross platform dev framework today (AIR could, should be the first one ?)
W8 phone / modern UI market grows : no support, no credibility for our clients

I'm developping AIR apps for a few years now. But for new apps AIR isn't really an option. Windows Phone is getting too big to ignore, and like it or not windows 8 'modern' exist and will be around for some time.
So YES to AIR on Windows Phone and Windows 8 RT/ modern.

Early indications are that Windows Phone 8 users monetize well. Market penetration is high in some international regions. At some point, developers will be forced to look for alternatives to AIR in order to support WP8 if it does not get ported soon.

Please revive this amazing platform. Hire people that believe in AIR and can make the right decisions for the platform if you dont have those people, and let those people be heard if you do. Windows 8/RT/Phone support would be trivial for you to implement and would generate a lot of amazing apps using your tools. Heck, Microsoft would probably love to partner with you and promote this - they did it for Unity and Corona.

Windows Phone share is seriously on the rise, but the gaming apps are relatively poor. There's a market waiting for our awesome Flash games, right here.

With the risen propularity of windows phone, Adobe Air is no longer the "run anywhere" solution, we need to have windows phone support.

Microsoft just announced their new universal app format that will run the same app on Windows, phone and Xbox. This would be the perfect platform for AIR to support to maximize the effect of your work.

I would definitely love to see this as well. We are tracking Windows Phone closely and suspect its adoption rate will be more impressive than we think. Also, comparable platforms are targeting Windows Phone 8 with relative ease.

"Hello I can create an app for ios/android/BB and Windows phone in a single move"
I really want to say that for my next AIR project !

  • Bozster

    12:14:46 PM GMT+00:00 Oct 17, 2013

Absolutely essential. AIR is coming back to be my preferred development environment for rich media apps and with the current growth of Win8 and Win8 Phone this support is a must. The reason why AIR is super important on Windows 8 Metro UI and Windows Phones is A) Games B) Rich interactive applications that need to have custom feel and ultimate creative freedom. Native tools/frameworks are a must for most apps, if you want to build a rich user experience AIR is the ticket. Needless to say AIR is currently and for the foreseeable future the absolute best technology for it and not having support for these 2 Win8 environments is doing nothing but depriving end users of amazing creative experiences as well as developers with the ease of development.

Lack of Adobe AIR for Windows 8 Phone (and Desktop) is a glaring omission given that the platform is a) not going away b) firmly entrenched as the #3 option.
